Book two different airports. You land at Tambolaka (TMC) in the west and leave from Waingapu (WGP) in the east — a return ticket to one airport will not fit this route.

In short

The single most expensive thing a guest can get wrong is booking a return flight to one airport. The trip crosses the island west to east and never doubles back, so you need two separate one-way sectors.

  • Fly in to Tambolaka (TMC). Pick-up is at 12.00 WITA on day one, at the airport or a hotel nearby.
  • Fly out of Waingapu (WGP). The trip closes at 11.00 WITA on the last day.
  • Come a day early. If you can only arrive on the day, take a flight landing before noon.
  • Fly home a day later if you can. The itinerary cannot be shortened to fit an earlier flight.

  • Arrive Tambolaka (TMC)

    Pick-up is at 12.00 WITA on day one. Come a day early if you can.

  • Depart Waingapu (WGP)

    The trip closes at 11.00 WITA on the last day. Fly home a day later if you can.

  • Telkomsel only

    The one provider with usable signal across the island.

  • Bring a 32GB hard disk

    Your photos and video are copied to your own drive on day three.

  • Trekking sandals

    Paths down to the waterfalls are short but can be slippery.

  • Hat, sunglasses, sunblock

    Sumba is hot and the savanna has no shade.

Airport pick-up and drop-off are included in every trip. Flights themselves are not.

When to come

Sumba Changes Colour Twice A Year

Neither version is the wrong one. They are just different islands.

December to March · Green

The wet months. Hills turn emerald and the waterfalls run at full volume. Expect rain in the afternoons.

April to May · Turning

Still green, already drying out, and the quietest stretch of the year.

June to November · Yellow

The dry months. Savanna turns gold and skies stay clear. Waterfalls run lower.
