The Hawaii Of Indonesia, Without The Crowds
Sumba sits south of Flores and east of Bali, and almost nobody goes. Its coastline is empty, its interior is savanna and terraced rice, and its villages still build the high-peaked clan houses their ancestors did.
We cross the island the way it should be crossed. You land at Tambolaka in the west at midday, work east through waterfalls, savanna and hilltops, and fly out of Waingapu on the last morning. Nothing is retraced.
Every private trip is yours alone — your group, your vehicle, your tour leader — and every trip is filmed on a drone and a mirrorless camera. The footage is copied to you before you go home.

Day 1 · Land at Tambolaka
Pick-up at Tambolaka airport (TMC) at 12.00 WITA. Ratenggaro Traditional Village, then Pero Beach for sunset. Night in South West Sumba.

Day 2 · West coast, then east
Weekuri Lagoon and Mandorak Beach in the morning, Prai Ijing Traditional Village on the way inland, sunset at Warinding Hill, then on to Waingapu.

Day 3 · Savanna and waterfalls
Tanarara Savanna after breakfast, Waimarang or Tanggedu Waterfall after lunch, and sunset at Walakiri Beach. Your photos and video are copied to your drive tonight.

Day 4 · Last hills, then Waingapu
Sunrise at Tanau Hill, then a souvenir stop and Persaudaraan Hill on the way to Waingapu airport (WGP). The trip closes at 11.00 WITA.
Arrive in Sumba a day early and fly out a day late if you can. The trip starts at 12.00 on day one and ends at 11.00 on the last day, and same-day connections leave no margin.

When To Come
Sumba changes colour twice a year. Neither version is the wrong one — they are just different islands.
December to March · Green season
The wet months. Hills turn emerald, the waterfalls run at full volume and the rice terraces are flooded. Expect rain in the afternoons.
April to May · Green turning gold
The quiet middle. Still green, already drying out, roads firm again, and the fewest visitors of the year.
June to November · Yellow season
The dry months. Savanna turns gold, skies stay clear for the drone, and Walakiri gives you the sunset you have seen in photographs. Waterfalls run lower.
Getting To Sumba
Book two different airports. You land at Tambolaka (TMC) in the west and leave from Waingapu (WGP) in the east — the route crosses the island and never doubles back, so a return ticket to one airport will not fit. Both connect through Bali. Telkomsel is the only provider with usable signal across Sumba, and bring a hard disk of 32GB or more: your photos and video are copied to your drive on day three.
